Trail Permits

A Trail Permit is required in order to travel the OFSC prescribed trail system. Each Trail Permit sold applies to one individual snowmobile, regardless of who is riding it. The trail permit is only valid when affixed to the snowmobile for which it was purchased and located in the prescribed location. It is not valid in a pocket.

This year only the Registered Owner of the snowmobile may purchase a Trail Permit for the snowmobile. When you go to purchase a Trail Permit this year please have the vehicle's Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) available. This is a requirement of the Ministry of Transportation as the Trail Permit is now sold for a specific snowmobile.

If stopped on the Trail by a Police Officer, Conservation Officer, or S.T.O.P. Officer you will also be required to produce the pink slip that you received when the permit was purchased so always carry it with the snowmobile just like you do with the ownership card and insurance card. Just like a car the vehicles ownership, license, trail permit receipt plus the Trail Permit affixed to the snowmobile in the prescribed location must be there or a fine may be levied by the Police Officer, Conservation Officer or S.T.O.P. Officer.

A Trail Permit is required in order to travel the OFSC trail system. At the present time anyone who is travelling on the OFSC Trail system and found not to have a valid trail permit will be subject to a fine of a minimum of $200 to a maximum of $1000 when stopped by a Police Officer , Conservation Officer or S.T.O.P. Officer.

Trail permits are available from about 200 Trail Building clubs in the province. These clubs follow the "Buy Where You Ride" philosophy. Each of these clubs may place Trail Permits in outlets in their area for your convenience. Please contact the club of your choice to find out where these outlets are located.

If you require additional information please check out www.e-laws.gov.on.ca under the Motorized Snow Vehicle Act. Back to top

What Snowmobilers Need to Know About Buying a Trail Permit this Season

When Bill 101 became law this year, it made changes that effect Snowmobile Trail Permit buyers. But first, here are a few things that haven¹t changed:

•Trail Permits will continue to be available from your local club or from the usual outlets, mail orders or web sites authorized by your club to sells permits.

• "Buy Where You Ride" is still your guide as to which club to purchase a permit from.

•All permit revenues are retained by the selling club, with a portion going the OFSC to sustain snowmobile trails in Ontario. No permit money goes to the government.

•The Seasonal Permit still allows you full winter access to the entire OFSC Snowmobile Trail System whenever it is open for snowmobiling.

•Your pink slip copy of the Application for Trail Permit Form should be retained in order to obtain a Replacement Permit from the club from whom you originally purchased your permit.

•Your Trail Permit should still be affixed in the prescribed location on the sled for which it was purchased.

•You can still join your local club or association by completing their separate membership application. Back to top

You should also be aware of these changes for the upcoming season:

•It is now law in the Province of Ontario for each sled using an OFSC trail to display a valid snowmobile trail permit.

This requirement applies to OFSC trails on private, Crown and municipal land, and is enforceable by police, conservation and S.T.O.P. officers. (See the Regulations for specified trail permit exemptions; for example, landowners and their families when on their own property, commercial users such as licensed trappers and prospectors, and others.)

•The fine for not having a valid permit is a minimum of $200 to a maximum of $1,000.

•The fine for not displaying a valid permit is $90.

•Trail Permits can only be sold to the registered owner of the snowmobile. It is now necessary to provide the snowmobile Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) as part of the purchase transaction. The registration number is not acceptable.

•An OFSC Member Benefit Card is no longer being produced. If you wish to receive OFSC benefits including Ontario Snowmobiler Magazine (OSM), the OSM Trail Map Atlas and the OFSC TOP Trail Guide, you must Sign Up separately. In the Trail Permit book, there are two separate forms. One is the Application to Purchase A Trail Permit Form (blue), and the other is the "OFSC Requirements &Trail Use Information" Form (white). By checking the box in section 1 of this latter form and providing your signature, you can sign up for OFSC benefits at the same time as you buy your trail permit .

•By Signing Up for OFSC Benefits, you also qualify for two chances to win great prizes in the OFSC SIGN UP Contest (for details, see the full page “Sign Up” ad elsewhere in this issue).

•OFSC Prescribed Trail Signs are being posted to clearly identify all OFSC snowmobile trails. These signs will provide snowmobilers with a visual identifier to assist in staying on the proper trail. Back to top
